The Digitization Project of the Lopez Memorial Museum and Library

The Lopez Memorial Museum and Library holds a rich collection of Juan Luna paintings and works by other acclaimed Filipino modern artists. Its galleries serve as a venue for patrons to access these masterpieces. Changing exhibitions and workshops facilitate various forms of interaction between art patrons and these works. The museum also fulfills its purpose by providing the community, especially students, with an alternative space for learning.

The Lopez Memorial Museum and Library is not limited to art collections. The library takes pride in its rich Filipiniana collection, which includes books by Dr. José Rizal, as well as complete issues of major broadsheets. Such a rich collection comes with great responsibility. To address this, the library makes use of available resources and technologies. Since the nature of its collection requires state-of-the-art preservation techniques, the library decided to digitize most of its holdings. However, limited human and technological resources forced them to outsource the digitization process. Creating digital formats of the collection entails the responsibility of making them available and accessible to library users, leading to the creation of an information retrieval system. They initially used Alchemy but opted to transfer to Docu1 for better storage. Still, there are issues, as it was observed that the retrieval of information lacks precision and a user-friendly interface.

To improve the delivery of its digital collection, the library should acknowledge these concerns and conduct a study on them. Proper indexing, enhancement of the user interface, and investment in better hardware support should be considered. It would also be beneficial if the information retrieval system were made accessible online.
