IRRI Library and the Millennium

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is the leading institution in rice research. It is strategically located near UP Los BaƱos, where vast hectares of fertile land are available. With this advantage, it is reasonable to enhance the parallel resources of the institution—its library.

The IRRI library is firmly situated within the IRRI complex. As observed, it is safe to say that the library fairly complements IRRI's research activities. In addition to a vast collection of tangible and electronic books, theses, journals, and articles on rice, the library also houses information resources in various academic disciplines. To maximize the use of its collection, the IRRI library decided to adopt a commercial library system—Millennium. With Millennium, the library developed an Information Retrieval System that is accessible online and comprehensive in its search features. Full texts of electronic journals and articles can also be downloaded from the IRS. The library is fortunate to have a good number of support staff to manage the daily operations of each section.

However, with dwindling international support, the library is now considering the possibility of using open-source software to become more cost-effective.
